A rape aggression defense (RAD) course is being offered on November 17, 20, 24 and 27 by UVic Campus Security. The course will be offered from 7 to 10 p.m. RAD teaches realistic self defence movements which require neither special skills nor years of practice to master. The course is team taught by certified instructors in a safe and structured atmosphere.
An afternoon course&emdash;the only one of the year&emdash; will be offered Dec. 15, 16, 17, and 18 from 1 to 4 p.m.
To register for RAD, contact Fiona Patton, Personal Safety Co-ordinator, at 721-8981. The cost is: students, $15; staff $20; alumni $30 and public $40.
Nominations close Nov. 28 for the UVic Alumni Association's Award for Excellence in Teaching. Up to three winners have been chosen each year since 1989.
"Probably the best part about receiving the award has been the ongoing appreciation from students and the public&emdash;who don't forget about it because of the pictures of us in the library," says 1995 award recipient Dr. Holly Devor (Sociology). Students, faculty, staff or alumni may submit a nomination seconded and supported by no fewer than five others.
The award is for professors who go above-and-beyond in their service to students. A comprehensive knowledge of the course material, good preparation, infectious enthusiasm for the subject and a reputation for superior teaching skills are among the criteria to be considered.
Dr. Bill Pfaffenberger (Mathematics and Statistics) says winning the award in 1994 was "the highlight of my almost 29-year teaching career" and that it gave formal recognition to the fact that he has always prided himself in trying to have an impact on his students.
A selection committee is chaired by the Vice-President Academic and Provost (or nominee), two regular faculty members, three undergraduate students, one graduate student and three alumni.
Nomination papers are available from the Alumni Relations office, University House 1.
