Something to think about
It's enough to drive you to think. UVic communications services was recently contacted by a UBC representative who had been on the receiving end of complaints about how a "Thinking about University? Think about UVic" recruitment ad placed in the Nov. 14 Vancouver Sun was infringing on the Vancouver university's "Think About It" campaign. The UBC campaign was launched with much fanfare by a baseball cap-toting President Martha Piper at her installation in the fall of 1997. The inquiry sent The Ring rushing out to consult its sources. Not to worry, however, the UVic admissions ads have been running since 1995 in places as far-flung as Calgary, the Lower Mainland and the Okanagan, wherever UVic's energetic recruiting team has landed in the past three-and-a-half years. In the generous spirit of the season, we thanked UBC for drawing the matter to our attention, and provided assurances that we have no hard feelings about their pilfering our slogan.
Who are your top 20 millennium 'stars'?
Here's something else for you to ponder as 1998 draws to a close and the new millennium looms on the horizon. The Globe & Mail wants to compile a list of the top 100 movers and shakers of the last 1,000 years&emdash;for publication in its Jan. 2, 1999 issue&emdash;and is asking for people to submit their top 20 picks. "They needn't be people you admire or whose impact on human development was beneficial," says the paper, citing Hitler and Stalin as examples. The paper also reminds everyone that notables such as Jesus of Nazareth, Buddha and Mohammed belonged to the previous millennium and aren't eligible. On the other hand, Joan of Arc, da Vinci, Galileo and Bach are solid candidates. The list should be of individuals, rather than groups, such as the Beatles. "Unfetter yourself and roam freely," urges the paper. "Your millennium top 20 are residing somewhere between Céline Dion and the Dark Ages." Your picks must be received by Dec. 28, 1998. Send them to: email: focus@globeandmail.ca; fax: (416) 536-5699; or mail: Globe & Mail Focus, 444 Front St. W, Toronto, Ont. M5V 2S9.
Everyone wins at ESG open house
More than 100 winners emerged from the open house hosted on Nov. 12 by the photography, graphics, television and computing education sections of computing user services. Among them were door prize winners Wu-Sheng Lu (electrical and computer engineering), Diana McBratney (secondary teacher education), and Jacquie Parker (occupational health and safety). All attendees were offered the chance to create a personalized Web page in computing education's computer classroom, incorporating a digitized portrait, taken, cropped and enhanced by photo services. The Web pages are being hosted by the educational services group (ESG) in the short-term, until people get their own addresses set up.
