Vikes rookie cross-country runner Bruno Mazzotta was named to Canada's national junior team earlier this month and will compete this spring in the world cross-country championships in March in Belfast, Ireland.
Mazzotta will be competing against 200 to 250 other runners in this prestigious event. The physics and astronomy student has had an outstanding year, finishing the CIAU season with a 13th place finish at the CIAU national championship in Waterloo, Ontario, and being named Canada West male rookie-of-the-year for his sport.
Members of the Vikes men's swim team turned in outstanding performances recently at an event on the World Cup circuit in Bryan, Texas. Phillip Weiss won the 400- metre men's individual medley, breaking a decade-old Vikes record set by John Kelly, and beating out Olympic champion, American Tom Dolan, who finished fourth.
Weiss also won a silver medal in the 200-metre individual medley. Rick Say took the bronze in the men's 400-metre freestyle event, breaking a Vikes record set in 1994. Christin Petelski won a gold medal in the 200-metre breaststroke and finished second in the 100-metre breaststroke, breaking her own best time by a second-and-a-half.
