UNITED WAY CAMPAIGN

Everyone's a winner, some more than others...

Christmas came early for Dr. Claire Carlin (French language and literature) when her name was drawn as the winner of a new iMac computer, compliments of Apple Canada and the UVic computer store.

All donors to this year's United Way campus campaign were eligible for the draw. Off-campus donor David Ballantyne was the second grand-prize winner. He'll enjoy a Dunsmuir Lodge gift basket including a deluxe suite, dinner, breakfast and more.

Several UVic departments and faculties held their own prize draws as United Way fundraisers. Facilities management staff built a one-of-a-kind, Victorian-style doghouse and then sold 632 tickets raising $1,111 for the campaign. The winner of the pooch palace was Barbara McIntyre, the former chair of UVic's theatre department. Faculty of business adjunct professor Dr. Victor Lotto painted a watercolour of Oak Bay Marina, framed it, and offered it as a fundraiser for the campaign. Over $400 of raffle tickets were sold and Dr. Eric Morse (business) won the original Lotto&emdash;his second win in as many years. Over at the student employment centre, staff continued their tradition of creating a gourmet gift basket to raffle off. They sold $427.10 worth of tickets and the winner was Dianne Restal (accounting).

Along with the grand prizes, several other consolation prizes were awarded to the following campus donors: John Hayman (English)&emdash;Phoenix Theatre tickets; Jennifer Margison&emdash;UVic golf bag; Dr. John Durkin (psychological foundations)&emdash;private reserve wine from Dr. David Leeming; Dr. Warren Little (electrical and computer engineering)&emdash;photocopy vendcard; Dr. Ted Wooley (history)&emdash;UVic summer camps voucher; Dr. David Turkington (physical education)&emdash;lunch at Dunsmuir Lodge; Sandra Meigs (visual arts)&emdash;$50 continuing studies gift certificate); Lynne Jordan (library)&emdash;lunch with the board of governors chair; and Dr. Nelson Smith (English)&emdash;UVic sweatshirt.

The campus campaign is still a bit short of its $100,000 goal. Donations are being accepted until the end of December. For further information and a pledge form contact Neil MacLean at 721-7037.
