The newest member of the University of Victoria's board of governors is no stranger to campus politics. Ritu Mahil is vice-president of the UVic graduate students society, is an executive member and past president of the on-campus political club, and has begun her second year as a student representative on the university senate. In April she was elected by students to a one-year term on the board of governors. "My main interest in being on senate is to help address issues of academic standards," says Mahil, who is also working on a law degree and a master's in public administration. "On the board, I get to see the big financial picture. My role is to make sure that student interests remain at the top of the agenda." Mahil earned a BA in political science from UVic in 1996, along the way earning the Lady Laurier Irma Dunn scholarship in political science and the Robert Lorne Stanfield Prize in political science. From 1996-98, she was a research assistant with Dr. Colin Bennett in political science, researching papers related to privacy and freedom of information issues. Earlier this year, Mahil completed a co-op work term as an investigations assistant in the Ministry of Labour, researching her favorite topic-labour relations and labour law. Most recently, she worked for the dean of law's office, organizing a conference on hate crimes, held at UVic in September. Mahil's term on the board extends to April 30, 1999.
