Are you stuck in the World Wide Web? Would you like to use the Web for teaching- without getting tangled?
If you're a faculty member and you answered yes to these questions, computing user services has two new learning opportunities to help you explore Web-based educational technologies.
The 'Web Workroom' offers help with Website authoring, from design to implementation. 'Discovery' sessions are designed to help faculty keep up with developing educational technologies and to assist them in putting research and teaching materials on the Web.
The sessions respond to a need identified in the successful "Collaborative Learning" series last year, says Ise Henin, supervisor of education programs in computing user services. "We saw that faculty members are moving into using Web-based tools as adjuncts to their classroom-based courses," says Henin. "We've offered learning opportunities to faculty for many years, but rapid changes in the Web, especially where faculty are concerned, has encouraged us to expand our offerings."
"The Web Workroom" begins Oct. 6 in HSDB 241-the computing user services' computer classroom-which is equipped with the latest Windows and Macintosh computers, a colour scanner and colour printer, and access to video and digital cameras. Faculty members are encouraged to drop-in and get an individual consultation for design of their Website, or work independently with help available when needed.
The Web Workroom is also well-suited for tasks needing specialized software and hardware. Workroom hours are Wednesdays from 12:30 - 2:30 p.m. and Thursdays from 2:30 -4:00 p.m.
"Discovery sessions," starting on Oct. 7, will offer explanations of technology (for example, "Why and How to Teach on the Web") and demonstrations of practical tasks (for example, "How to use a scanner to prepare graphics for your Website"). Each session will run twice; once on Thursdays, 12:30-2:00 p.m., and again on Fridays, 12:30-2:00 p.m.
