Field hockey Vikes head for the nationals

The Vikes women’s field hockey team is headed to the national championships next month but it will be as a wild card entry.

Although the team won the final Canada West tournament of the season at UVic Oct. 22 - 24, it ended up ranked second overall to UBC for regular season play and missed the automatic trip to the championships granted to the top-ranked team. But the Vikes’ consistently high national ranking -- currently number two in the country -- means the UVic squad will also be among the teams competing for the CIAU title.

Three members of the Vikes squad were named to the all-star team: fifth-year forward Aoibhinn Grimes, who led the conference with 16 goals for the season; fifth-year midfielder and forward Veronica Planella, last year’s CIAU most valuable player; and fifth-year forward Kristen Taunton, who was also awarded the Gail Wilson Award as the year’s outstanding contributor. Grimes won the Canada West player-of-the-year trophy, the Liz Hoffman Award.

This year’s CIAU field hockey championship will be held at the University of Waterloo, Nov. 4 - 7. The Vikes have won the title eight times in the past 16 years.
