National championships for two Vikes squads

The Vikes men's soccer team won its fifth national title in team history on Nov. 13 with a 3-1 win over the Saint Mary's Huskies from Halifax at Centennial Stadium, wrapping up a strong season for the squad in the finale of the 2011 CIS men's soccer national championship. The Vikes host the 2012 CIS women's soccer national championship Nov. 8-11, 2012, and will also host the 2012 Golf Canada university and college national championship at the end of May at the Cordova Bay Golf Course. UVic's women's rowing team also won another national title—their 10th in team history—in a dramatic conclusion to the 2011 Canadian University Rowing Championship on Nov. 6 in Welland, ON.

The UVic Alumni Association is accepting nominations for the Gilian Sherwin Alumni Award for Excellence in Teaching. The award recognizes the university’s best sessional lecturers, lab instructors and senior lab instructors based on innovation, curriculum development and educational leadership.


Alumni annual meeting

The UVic Alumni Association invites alumni and the university community to its 2011 annual general meeting, June 28 at 6:30 p.m. in the University Club. Guest speaker Dr. Ray Siemens (English), Canada Research Chair in Humanities Computing, will explore elements of how the digital humanities are contributing to new technology and the next steps in the development of e-books. The association will also confer honorary alumni status upon retired Alumni Relations Director Don Jones and retired Human Resources Manager Lois Jones.
