Student Refugee Program changes lives at UVic

The arrivals area of the Victoria International Airport is generally a pretty quiet place. So this August, when it was filled with UVic students holding brightly coloured signs in Swahili, it was clear they were celebrating an important occasion. The welcoming committee was there to greet Ali Issack, Mohamed Idle, and Hanna Godalle to Canada. The three students were sponsored to come to Canada and study at UVic through the World University Service of Canada’s (WUSC) Student Refugee Program.

Instead of a cubicle, Thomas Diesch and Ashley Currie call the picturesque Gulf Islands their office. Instead of choosing between the stairs or the elevator, they take a Zodiac to get to work. And instead of pushing paper, they trap raccoons, document songbirds and pluck crabs out of the ocean.


Computer engineering medalist loves what he does

Not every graduating student can look back and say they loved the difficult assignments and long hours in the library, but David Daobing Gong isn’t your typical graduate. He calls computer engineering his passion and says assignments never seemed like a chore. Sailing through his degree with an A average, ten scholarships and awards, and the IEEE Victoria Section Gold Medal in Computer Engineering, his love for his work has clearly paid off.
