UVic Law’s 40th anniversary: a legal education of quality and commitment

Thu, 2015-03-05 09:52

2015 is a banner year for UVic Law: its 40th anniversary. We often think of UVic Law as a young faculty, but it has now delivered four decades of first-class legal education.

On March 6 and 7, the faculty will celebrate this milestone with a series of events for alumni, faculty, students and friends. It is a time to take stock. What kind of law school is UVic? What distinctive contributions has it made to Canadian legal education over the last 40 years? Or, to put the question with a little more edge: Would British Columbia, would Canada, be any different if UVic Law had not been founded?

Don't look now, but you’re living on the Edge . . . and it's a great place to be!

On Feb. 24, in the University Centre, hundreds of students, staff and faculty were on hand to greet UVic’s vibrant new look: a positioning concept, university narrative, and visual identity that reflects our university’s distinct qualities and defines the characteristics that set us apart—the UVic Edge.

Residence renewal plan proposed

Residences Services is proposing a 10-year plan to address significant needed improvements to the university’s aging student residences and a shortage of campus housing.

Among the needed work are new roofs, mechanical systems, and the removal and replacement of water-damaged building exteriors. An increase in residence fees, which are currently up to 30 per cent less than comparable Canadian universities, is proposed to pay for the maintenance projects as well as construction of a new residence in the coming years.

The thermometers are overflowing, and that can only mean one thing. UVic has completed another successful United Way campaign, exceeding our 2014 goal of $262,000. The final tally for money raised during the 2014 campaign, as of January 5, was $268,000. Thanks to more than 425 wonderful UVic United Way supporters, we were able to make a significant contribution to United Way Greater Victoria (UWGV) again this year.

If UVic Chancellor Murray Farmer has a recurring dream, it must surely include the words “Admitto Te,” or “I admit you.” After all, he has spoken those words more than 17,000 times in the past six years, presiding over 79 convocation ceremonies. Each time, the words were accompanied by a warm smile and a gentle tap on the head of the student with his cap, as he congratulated them on his or her accomplishments.

Farmer’s term as Chancellor wraps up on Dec. 31, after six memorable years as the titular head of the university. His connection with UVic, however, goes back much further—back, in fact, to the earliest days of the university.
