The College and University Retiree Associations of Canada (CURAC) will hold its 10th Annual Conference and General Meeting at UVic in collaboration with the UBC Association of Professors Emeriti and the SFU Retirees Association from April 18–20. Most of the knowledge-based events will be held at University Centre, though social gatherings are shared between UVic campus and the Harbour Towers Hotel in downtown Victoria. Conference themes include: success stories in local association activities; member surveys; pension plan governance; and ideas that help retirees live better lives. Autism walk
The YAM Magazine Victoria Autism Walk, Vancouver Island’s largest annual autism event, will take place on the UVic campus April 15 from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Hundreds of children, families, professionals and supporters from the community will walk or run to raise funds and awareness for the 1 in 90 children diagnosed with autism. The event will include entertainment, a kids’ zone, character visits, information booths, food and much more. Co-op and Career helps local small business hire students
UVic’s Co-operative Education Program and Career Services will help eight to 10 Vancouver Island businesses hire post-secondary students to grow their e-commerce strategies, thanks to a new partnership with Industry Canada’s Small Business Internship Program (SBIP). Through the agreement, UVic Co-op and Career will allocate $80,000 in SBIP funding to small- or medium-sized businesses wishing to hire students for a 12-week internship. The University of Victoria is transitioning to a new copyright environment and will be giving notice to Access Copyright (AC) that it will not operate under the interim tariff after Aug. 31, 2012. All UVic faculty/instructors, staff and students must abide by the requirements of the Canadian Copyright Act when making copies or distributing information electronically.
Celebrate Earth Day at the cycling festival
This coming Earth Day, April 22, the University of Victoria Sustainability Office is partnering with the District of Saanich to host the 3rd annual Saanich Cycling Festival. The festivities will take place between 11:00 a.m. and 2:30 p.m., in parking lot #10, and will feature entertainment, information displays and activities for young and old alike.
UVic Carrot Mob to hit Sauce Restaurant March 21
Last year UVic’s Business Sustainability Club held its first Carrot Mob event at the Fernwood Inn raising $16,000 to help the historic neighbourhood pub become a more environmentally friendly business. This year, on Wednesday, March 21, they are targeting downtown Victoria’s inner harbour restaurant district by helping Sauce Restaurant and Lounge green its business. From 11:30 a.m. to closing at 1 a.m. all proceeds will go towards making their business more sustainable. In turn, Sauce will be offering all kinds of specials throughout the day in support of Carrot Mob. Harnessing the power of the consumer to affect change, the focal point of the all day event will begin at 5:00 at the restaurant, located 1245 Wharf Street in Victoria att the corner of Yates.
UVic a bottled water free campus?
The Office of Campus Planning and Sustainability is looking for your thoughts about a possible ban on bottled water on campus. The UVic Students’ Society has voted to ban the sale of bottled water in the Student Union Building beginning April 1, and has requested that UVic ban the sale of bottled water campus-wide.
