Sager honoured for life’s work
Dr. Eric Sager (history), an expert in historical research on the Canadian census who has worked tirelessly to communicate the relevance of history to our daily lives, was awarded the Confederation of University Faculty Associations of BC’s Paz Buttedahl Career Achievement Award on Apr. 11. CUFA BC represents approximately 4,600 university professors, instructors, academic librarians and other academic staff at five BC universities.
Marine biologist recognized as “rising star”
Dr. Julia Baum (biology) is among 126 recipients of the 2012 Sloan Fellowships, announced in February by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation. The annual award honours early-career scientists and scholars whose potential and achievements identify them as rising stars. This is the first year the Sloan Award has included ocean sciences. A Day in the Life: Dr. Rossi Marx
A day in the life of Dr. Rossi Marx often ends on the 11:30 p.m. bus out of Ring Road. “I’m not a nine-to-fiver,” says Marx, senior laboratory instructor and sessional lecturer in the department of biology.
Marx, a neurobiologist, is passionate about fostering a learning environment for students.
Day in the life: Dr. Erich Schwandt
A day in the life of Professor Emeritus Erich Schwandt (music)—if it happens to be a UVic Convocation day—involves playing the huge Clearihue organ in the University Centre Farquhar Auditorium. For the past 30 years, Schwandt has provided the music for UVic Convocation ceremonies during which tens of thousands of grads have crossed the stage.
Crozier named to Order of Canada
Lorna Crozier (writing) has been named an Officer of the Order of Canada by Governor General David Johnston. One of Canada’s most beloved and talented poets, Crozier became a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada in 2009 and won UVic’s Craigdarroch Award for Excellence in Artistic Expression in 2010. She has published 15 books of poetry and has received numerous awards—including the Governor General’s Literary Award as well as a pair of honourary doctorates for her contributions to Canadian literature and her designation as a Distinguished Professor at UVic.
Two new conductors lead the School of Music in fresh directions
UVic’s School of Music has a pair of new conductors, and while both are young and innovative, each offers students a distinctly different tempo. Award-winning European composer and conductor Ajtony Csaba has stepped up to lead the UVic Orchestra, while Newfoundland composer and trumpet player Patrick Boyle is showing his brass with the Jazz Ensemble.
New faces in new places
